2nd Grade Enrichment Clubs at Reed
Did you know that every Wednesday all second grade students participate in afternoon enrichment clubs? Specialists, teachers, and staff offer a wide array of club topics and students cast ballots with their top 4 choices. New topics and clubs are formed about every six weeks. Some of the clubs students have participated in this year have included: Green Team, Spanish, Gardening, Math Games, Advanced Art, Music, Sportsmanship, and Coding for Beginners. Last month the Green Team gave an amazing presentation at Community Time and taught the whole school how to recycle lunch trays. Way to pay it forward 2nd grade!

Community Time Farewell to Mrs. Dutt
Last week the entire student body bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Dutt at our Community Time assembly. Classes honored Mrs. Dutt by singing songs, sharing individual memories, and even performing one of Mrs. Dutt's favorite stories-Bark George Bark! It was a lovely tribute to one of our favorite people. Be sure to check out the blog on the Reed website.

On Friday, January 27th our Strategic Planning Collaborative met to brainstorm ways to enhance home/school communication and the sharing of resources. SPC parent members gave excellent suggestions and feedback which will be shared with our entire Reed team.

    January 9th Staff Development Day
On January 9th Reed and Bel Aire teachers and specialists participated in a full day of professional development training at the Academy of Science in San Francisco. The focus of the training was to understand the crosscutting concepts that are part of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Crosscutting concepts (CCCs) are ways of understanding, analyzing, and making meaning of the domains of science. CCCs equally apply across all content areas including language arts, mathematics, music and PE. It was a full and exciting day!

"Crosscutting concepts have value because they provide students with connections and intellectual tools that are related across the differing areas of disciplinary content and can enrich their application of practices and their understanding of core ideas. - Framework p. 233"

New! 5-minute Loading Zone at Reed
To help make those midday drop off and pick ups a little easier, we now have a 5-minute zone in our front inner circle. The hours for the zone are between 9:00am and 1pm. This time frame allows the buses plenty of time for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. We ask that parents and drivers make every effort to honor the time limit. Thank you!

    Strategic Planning Collaborative (SPC)
The second meeting will be held on Friday 27th January 8:30-10:00am. Collaborative members will be discussing communication and ways to optimize home-school communications. Meetings are open, however active participation is limited to collaborative members.

    Time to Say Goodbye
Please help us wish a happy and well-deserved retirement to our beloved librarian, Mrs. Rekha Dutt. Hour of Code
Reed Elementary students will be participating in this year's Hour of Code (a worldwide event encouraging students to engage in computer programming) during the week of December 5-11. Coding helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity. Learning to code also fosters the development of expressive digital literacy and design skills. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Learn more on our RUSD Math website.

    December STEAM Lab: Circuitry
(STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math)
Research tells us that students only pursue careers that they know about. Toward this end, our goal is provide students exposure to an array of 21st century skills and experiences. This month all Reed students will engage in several fun circuitry explorations in our STEAM Lab. Students will create simple electrical circuits, discover what's needed to light up an LED, and even create a human circuit! They will even be bringing home a circuit-related surprise integrating science and art before the winter break. Look out for it!

    Strategic Planning Collaborative
The Reed Strategic Planning Collaborative (SPC) met for the first time in November. The team discussed avenues for sharing/communicating with families all the great things that are happening at Reed School. A huge thank you goes out to Adrea Goldberg, Nicole Corcoran, Kathleen Martens, and Julia Cashin for representing our parent community.  We will continue to explore this topic at our January 27 meeting. Meetings are open to all but participation is reserved for collaborative members.

    Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI)
Did you know that all Reed teachers and several instructional aides are now in year two of professional development in Cognitively Guided Instruction? CGI is a research based instructional approach that focuses on developing students' problem solving skills in the area of mathematics but can be implemented across the curriculum. In addition to the introductory article linked above, you also may check out Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction from our Reed library.

Unfortunately it's that time of year. We are seeing an increase in head lice. The above link is full of very useful information, please refer to this link to answer many of your questions.
If we find that your child has nits and/or lice, we will call you to come and pick up your child and have the lice treated. We will also send an exposure notice to the classroom. Here are a few guidelines to remember if you receive a notification that your child has lice:
    • thoroughly check your child and all other family members
    • treat for lice, either at home or at a professional salon
    • re-inspect at regular intervals
    • all children must come to the office for clearance before they will be re-admitted to class - do not place your child on the bus until you have been cleared
