Meet Christine Carter, Superintendent

ccarter_photo.jpgWelcome to Reed Union School District.  We are very proud of the many accomplishments achieved by staff and students in the District. Student achievement is at an all time high. Bel Aire has the Marin County's highest API of 953, Del Mar's score of 936 is the highest middle school in the county, and Reed Elementary has a strong score of 920.  As measured annually on the State-mandated STAR exam, 88% of our students are "Proficient and Above" in Language Arts, with 57% of students performing at Advanced levels. In Mathematics, 87% are"Proficient and Above," with 54% scoring at Advanced levels.  All schools in the District - Reed (grades K-2), Bel Aire (grades 3-5), and Del Mar Middle (6-8) - have been designated California Distinguished Schools. Del Mar was recently designated for a 4th time since the 1990's, and has been named an Apple Distinguished School for the past two years.  In addition, Bel Aire achieved status as a National Blue Ribbon School and was one of 12 schools in the nation recognized for its strong technology program.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Foundation for Reed Schools, which contributes $1 million to the District annually, we are able to provide an array of enrichment offerings for our students to complement our strong academic program. Art, music, and physical education are viewed as necessary components to our children's education and are taught by specialists who are credentialed in their area of expertise. Results from the annual state Physical Education exam show our students excelling in Marin County, as well as the State. Additionally, each school has a strong technology component to complement the curriculum. Every school is staffed with a credentialed technology teacher who works with teachers to ensure that technology is integrated into the classroom. To achieve the Board's Strategic Specific Result, "Create and deliver an articulated K-8 foreign language program, which is based on the national standards of foreign language instruction and encompasses a global perspective," Spanish instruction begins in 3rd grade.  Students have the opportunity to graduate from 8th grade completing the high school equivalent of Spanish II.

We believe that our job is to prepare our students for a world that has changed remarkably and will continue to change each year with technology innovations. Because of our commitment to be in the forefront of teaching and learning, we implemented the Millennial Classroom Project in 2005, providing a laptop computer to every student in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. We are seeing positive changes regarding students' and teachers' attitudes toward teaching and learning, with a new tool to access current and relevant information quickly. Results from a survey administered to over 300 middle school students can be accessed on this website. Currently, students in grades 3-5 also have access to their own computer thoughout the school day.

Parent involvement is very evident within the District. It is common to see parents actively involved in the classrooms on a daily basis. The PTA and The Foundation for Reed Schools, both parent-based organizations, are active partners with the District to provide our children with an outstanding K-8 educational experience.

Our District motto is to "Nurture, Teach, and Inspire." I hope as you browse through our web site you will see a multitude of examples demonstrating our commitment to student learning.

Sincerely,

Christine M. Carter
Superintendent
